Displacement

Physically pushes a mesh's vertices using a texture — real 3D geometry displacement, distinct from the 2D Displace/Liquify image filters, which only warp a flat image and never move actual geometry. Offsets vertices by a strength and midlevel, with flat-shading and normal-flip options.

The Displacement node in Infinite, showing its inputs, controls and outputs.

What it does

Displacement is a 3D node: it builds, changes or lights geometry that Render 3D turns into a picture. It takes 3D shape and picture in and gives 3D shape out.

Try it

Drive it with a slow-animated Noise texture to make a flat plane ripple like disturbed water.

Inputs and outputs

Inputs

  • 3D shape geo
  • picture texture

Outputs

  • 3D shape out

Controls

Every control with a range can be driven by a modulator, a note, an audio level or a sketch.

ControlRange or optionsDefault
modeScalar (along normal), Vector (RGB = XYZ)0
strength-2 to 21
midlevel0 to 10.5
flat shadeon or offoff
flip normalson or offoff
selection onlyon or offoff
